The Hawaii Fire Department recovered the body of a missing 57-year-old Hawaii island diver Thursday afternoon at Punaluu Bay in Kau.

The body was found floating in front of the Punaluu Pavilions, about 150 yards offshore.

The fire helicopter lowered a rescue specialist, who retrieved the body at 5:20 p.m. and brought it to shore using a net, the Fire Department said in a news release.

The Coast Guard and Fire Department were searching for the free diver near Punaluu.

The Coast Guard identified the diver as Robert Furtado.

His dive partner reported him missing at 5:30 a.m. about 200 yards southeast of Punaluu Boat Ramp. The Fire Department got the call at 8:12 a.m. and the first unit was on scene at 8:25 a.m.

Fire Department divers found his spear and dive buoy about 50 to 100 yards offshore.
