Maui police identified the 87-year-old woman who was killed when a car driven by her 11-year-old grandson knocked her to the ground Saturday.

Police identified the woman as Sueno Saito, of Haiku. The cause of death is pending an autopsy.

Police said the incident occurred at 12:48 p.m. Saturday in the parking lot of the Nisei Veterans Memorial Center at 665 Kahului Beach Road,  in Kahului.

The 11-year-old boy was backing a white 1999 Mitsubishi Galant four door sedan out of a marked parking stall when the driver’s side door of the Galant struck Saito, knocking her to the ground. The Galant then collided into a silver 2006 Honda Element multi-purpose vehicle stopped behind the Galant.

This is Maui County’s 13th fatality for 2015, as compared to 14 at this same time last year.

An ambulance took Saito to the Maui Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in critical condition. She died Sunday.
