Maui firefighters extinguished a pair of early morning fires burning within a sugar cane field off of Baldwin Avenue in Paia on Friday.

Firefighters responding to a 2:40 a.m. alarm found the fires burning just mauka of Paia Gym, on the Kahului side of Baldwin Avenue. The fires, located about 200 yards apart, were brought under within 10 minutes. Each burned approximately 2,000 square feet.

The causes of the fires were undetermined. No injuries were reported and no structures were threatened.
