Woman, 90, man, 57, escape burning home in Royal Kunia

A Honolulu Fire Department person inspects the fire damage at a home at 94-1040 Waiopae Street in Royal Kunia. The overnight fire damage was mostly kept in the garage.

A 90-year-old woman and 57-year-old man escaped without serious injury when fire broke out at a Royal Kunia home Friday night.

The fire broke out at about 11 p.m. at 94-1040 Waiopae Street. Arriving firefighters say smoke and flames coming from the garage of the single-story home.

Thirty-six firefighters from 10 companies brought the flames under control at 11:14 p.m. 

Damage is estimated at $160,000, including a 2007 Ford F350 truck.

The cause is under investigation.

An ambulance was called as precautionary measure, but both residents refused treatment.

The American Red Cross is assisting the people who live at the home with temporary shelter and other needs.
