Maui police ID man killed in park shootout

The man who shot at Maui Police and died after they returned fire Wednesday night in a Kahului park has been identified as 39-year-old Raymond Hodge.

At about 8:50 p.m., the three officers responded to a caller in Keopuolani Park who said he had been approached and asked questions by a man who produced a badge and claimed to be from U.S. Immigration.

Lt. William Juan, a spokesperson for the Maui County Police Department said no information was immediately available on whether the badge was real.

When police officers arriving on scene and approached Hodge, he became agitated, and then removed a handgun from his waistband and started shooting.

The three officers returned gunfire, leaving Hodge with an estimated 11 wounds from his legs to the top of his torso, police said. Hodge, a Maui resident, died at the scene.

One of the officers sustained minor injuries. The other two were uninjured.

Maui Police placed all three on administrative leave. The officers were seven-, four- and one-year veterans of the department.
