A 20-year-old Rhode Island man fell about 20 feet Wednesday from a cliff at Red Sands Beach in Hana, the Maui Fire Department reported.

Responding to an 11:52 a.m. call, Hana firefighters found the man, who had fallen from the trail leading to Red Sands Beach.

The man, who was backpacking with people he met on Maui, had tumbled off the edge of the trail, landing on lava rocks 20 feet below, the Fire Department said in a news release.

Fire officials said he was hiking to the beach with friends when he fell.

Firefighters treated the man for injuries and transported him by fire helicopter at 12:40 p.m. to the Hana Ball Park.

Paramedics treated him for non-life-threatening injuries, and he was transferred to a medevac helicopter and flown to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.
