Police said the driver lost control while heading northbound on Waihona Street (shown in the upper left of this map)

One person died in a fiery crash Sunday morning in Pearl City.

Police said the driver lost control while heading northbound on Waihona Street, about 350 feet makai of Kamehameha Highway, then traveled off the roadway and down a 30-foot ravine.

The vehicle caught fire and became engulfed in flames shortly before 2 a.m. The lone occupant was burned beyond recognition and officers could not determine the victim’s gender, police said.

The Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy.

Police said speed and alcohol did not appear to be factors.

It was the 32nd traffic fatality on Oahu this year compared to 38 at this time last year.
