CHARLOTTE, N.C. >> The jury hearing the case of a white North Carolina police officer charged with voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of an unarmed black man is returning for its first full day of deliberations.
The racially diverse jury of eight woman and four men is scheduled to come back to court Wednesday in the trial of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Randall Kerrick, who’s suspended without pay while facing a charge of voluntary manslaughter in the September 2013 shooting death of Jonathan Ferrell.
After listening to closing arguments and taking a lunch break Tuesday, the jury began its deliberations in earnest. The jury foreman did ask the judge in the case to read the elements of voluntary manslaughter for a second time before discussions began.
The trial is in its third week.
