Man wounded after officers fire shots on Hawaii island

Hawaii County police reported a police officer and a deputy sheriff fired shots at a 27-year-old Mountain View man Thursday afternoon after he allegedly drove toward them, and another deputy was reportedly hit by the man’s vehicle.

The officer and two deputy sheriffs were trying to serve a bench warrant at a Mauna Lani Tract Road home “when a vehicle sped towards the officers in a threatening manner,” police said in a news release.

The officer fired three shots and one deputy sheriff fired two rounds towards the vehicle, striking the 27-year-old driver.

After the man was shot, the vehicle hit the second deputy sheriff, then crashed into some bushes before coming to rest, police said.

Assistant Police Chief Henry Tavares said the deputy sheriff struck by the vehicle received minor injuries.

The shooting occurred at about 1:48 p.m. Thursday.

Tavares said Thursday afternoon he did not know who fired the shot that struck the man.

Police arrested the man at the scene on suspicion of attempted murder.

He was then taken by ambulance to the Hilo Medical Center for treatment of a non-life-threatening gunshot wound, police said. He remains in police custody while detectives investigate further.

Police will conduct a criminal investigation into the shooting and the Office of Professional Standards will conduct an administrative investigation, as is standard practice.
