The first 20 to 25 people living in the Kakaako homeless encampment will be swept on Sept. 8, Mayor Kirk Caldwell announced Thursday.

Notices will be given on Monday to occupants, asking them to leave.

Caldwell and Gov. David Ige said at a press conference Thursday there is enough shelter space to accommodate the targeted adults in what will be the first round of sweeps.

The group is located on the outskirts of the encampment in an area mauka of Ilalo Street.

Caldwell said that landowners such as Kamehameha Schools and businesses such as Cutter Auto have agreed to not allow homeless people to stay on their property during the sweep and Honolulu police will enforce trespassing violations.
