Warning signs are posted at Pearl Harbor near Hickam Beach and Pepeekeo Point on the Big Island following sewage spills earlier this week reported on Thursday.

Approximately 24,000 gallons was discharged near the intersection of Porter Avenue and 17th Street Aug. 24, of which, 12,000 gallons entered into a storm drain, which leads to a canal that empties into the ocean near Hickam Beach.

On the Big Island, on Aug. 23, an estimated 70,000 gallons of partially treated effluent from Kulaimano Wastewater Treatment Plant was dumped into the nearby coastal waters.

In both instances warning signs have been posted and water samples were collected.

The health department said Thursday afternoon that warning signs around Puu Poa marsh on Kauai near Hanalei have been removed after water sampling determined that a sewage spill did not reach nearshore waters.

The public is advised to stay out of the area until the signs have been removed.

A brown water advisory remains in effect for all coastal waters because of storm runoff from several days of rains.

The Department of Health advises that if the water is brown, beachgoers should stay out because of the risk of contamination.
