The state’s Candidate Advisory Council is seeking applicants to serve on the University of Hawaii Board of Regents for multiyear terms that would begin July 1.

The screening committee prescribed by state law is accepting applications and nominations through Oct. 3 for four seats on the voluntary 15-member board: two representing Honolulu, one representing Hawaii County and a student representative.

The terms of Jan Sullivan and Coralie Matayoshi, who hold the two Honolulu seats, expire next summer, along with the terms of student regent Michelle Tagorda and Hawaii County regent Wayne Higaki.

Both Sullivan, chief operating officer of Oceanit, and Matayoshi, CEO of the Hawaii chapter of the American Red Cross, were appointed to five-year terms in 2011. Higaki, chief development officer for North Hawaii Community Hospital, was named to his seat earlier this year to fill out the remaining term of Carl Carlson, who resigned last year.

The student regent term is capped under law at two years.

As the governing board of the 10-campus UH system, the board “formulates policy and exercises control over the university … (and) has exclusive jurisdiction over the internal structure, management and operation of the university,” according to UH’s website.

A 2014 state law added members of the Board of Regents to the list of public officials whose financial interests are disclosed to the public and made available on the state Ethics Commission’s website. The change triggered four regent resignations at the time.

Application materials and descriptions of regent responsibilities are available online at hawaii.edu/rcac.

Voters in 2006 passed a constitutional amendment creating the Candidate Advisory to present the governor with pools of qualified candidates. Previously, the governor had sole discretion over nominations to the board.
