No. 17 Hawaii rallies past Iowa

    2015 September 04 SPT - HSA PHOTO BY CINDY ELLEN RUSSELL UH Wahine Nikki Taylor, Tayler Higgins, Tai Manu-Olevao, Savanah Kahakai, Olivia Magill and Kalei Greeley regrouped after an official's call did not go their way in the first set against Iowa at the Stan Sheriff Center on Friday.

Junior hitter Nikki Taylor put down a match-high 22 kills and senior middle Olivia Magill had 11 of Hawaii’s 17.5 blocks as the 17th-ranked Rainbow Wahine turned back Iowa, 18-25, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 in Friday’s second match of the 27th Hawaiian Airlines Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. 

Sophomore hitter Kalei Greeley finished with a double-double with 12 kills and 11 digs for Hawaii (4-0), which takes on American (3-2) in Saturday’s 7 p.m.match. Junior setter Tayler Higgins added 44 assists and 11 digs for the Rainbow Wahine off to their best start since opening 5-0 in 2012. 

Lauren Broast led the Hawkeyes (2-2) with 14 kills. 

In Friday’s opener, No. 25 UCLA swept American, 25-19, 25-19, 25-18. The Bruins (2-1) 13 kills from Jordan Anderson while Allison Cappellino led the Eagles with eight. 

UCLA and Iowa meet Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
