The UH Rainbow wahine celebrated a kill made by teammate Nikki Taylor in the first set of Friday’s match against the University of Florida in the Outrigger Resorts Volleyball Challenge.

Junior hitter Nikki Taylor put down a career-high 27 kills and senior hitter Tai Manu-Olevao added 16 as No. 16 Hawaii rallied past No. 2 Florida Friday night 18-25, 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 15-9 at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Sophomore hitter Kalei Greeley added 11 kills and 10 digs for the Rainbow Wahine (7-1), who improved to 2-0 in the Outrigger Resorts Invitational. Sophomore libero Savanah Kahakai had a career-high 19 digs and Taylor added a season-high 17 digs.

“It was a complete team win,” Hawaii coach Dave Shoji said. “Kendra (reserve sophomore setter Koelsch) and Emily (sophomore middle Maglio) came in and gave us a lift. We also served tougher at the end.”

It was the first time since 2013 that Hawaii had beaten a Top 25 team at home, a streak of five losses.

Hawaii broke open a tight Set 5 behind the serves of junior setter Tayler Higgins. With the Wahine leading 7-6, Higgins’ 5-0 service run — that included an ace — helped Hawaii take control at 12-6.

For the Gators (5-1), Alex Holston finished with 19 kills and iva Racek 15. Reigning AVCA Freshman of the Year Rhamat Alhassan finished with 10 kills and has no hitting errors in two tournament matches.

Hawaii finishes out its tournament scheduled with Saturday’s 7 p.m. match against Eastern Washington (4-5). The Eagles were swept by San Diego State, 25-16, 25-18, 25-15.

The Aztecs (2-6) and Gators (5-1) meet Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
