Nine injured Monday in three-car collision on Kauai

Nine people were transported to the hospital after they were involved in a three-car collision Monday on Kauai.

At about 7 p.m. Monday, a Toyota sports utility vehicle driven by a 62-year-old Koloa man was heading south on Kuhio Highway near Princeville Airport when it crossed the center line and struck an oncoming Dodge sedan operated by a 55-year-old Princeville woman, according to police.

The SUV then crashed head-on into a Chrysler van driven by a 36-year-old California man traveling north with six passengers.

The SUV driver was transported to Wilcox Hospital and medevaced to Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition. He was upgraded to stable condition Tuesday morning.

Police said the 55-year-old woman was transported to Wilcox with non-life threatening injuries.

The Chrysler driver along with his passengers were transported to Wilcox, where they were evaluated and released.

Police closed the highway for three hours to conduct an investigation. Lanes reopened at 11:15 p.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
