A weather system south of Hawaii island developed into a tropical depression late Friday night.

Tropical Depression Seven-C was 395 miles south of South Point, Hawaii, and about 585 miles south-southeast of Honolulu at 11 p.m., according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

The system was packing maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and moving northeast at 7 mph.

The depression is expected to continue moving toward the northeast through early Saturday and make a turn to the west-northwest by Saturday night.

Forecasters anticipate “significant intensification” over the next 48 hours. It would be a record 12th Central Pacific cyclone this season if it develops into a tropical storm, which officials expect to happen in the next couple of days. It could intensify into a hurricane by Monday.
