New Mormon leaders expected to be named at church conference

SALT LAKE CITY » As many as three new high-ranking Mormon leaders could be named during this weekend’s church conference to fill vacancies on a governing body that sets church policy and runs the faith’s business operations.

Many scholars predict at least one of them will come from outside North America and Europe, which would mark a first in church history.

That speculation is ratcheting up the already fervent anticipation among members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for what will be a rare occurrence.

It has been six years since a new member of Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has been chosen and a more than a century since there were three openings at the same time.

Three recent deaths of quorum members created the openings.
