City Ocean Safety personnel responded to two separate incidents of kayakers in need of rescue today near the Mokulua Islands off Kailua Beach.

Honolulu Emergency Services Department spokeswoman Shayne Enright said the first rescue was at about 11:05 a.m. when a 29-year-old woman was injured while kayaking near the islands.

Lifeguards used a rescue watercraft to bring the woman to the Kailua boat ramp.

Emergency Medical Services personnel treated the woman for a cut to the head, but she refused transport to a hospital.

At 2:30 p.m., Ocean Safety got a 911 call again from the Mokulua Islands. Lifeguards assisted eight kayakers — all visitors — on six kayaks in need of help to return to shore.

One male kayaker had an injured leg but declined EMS treatment.

The conditions were choppy with 3- to 4-foot surf, Enright said.
