Pieces of a large banyan tree were cleared from Punahou Street this morning.

City arborists will examine a banyan tree and its fallen branches at a Punahou Square Park today and determine whether to remove or prune it, a city official said.

Branches of the tree fell late Monday night and city crews spent Tuesday removing tree debris. No one was hurt.

Michele Nekota, director of city Department of Parks and Recreation, said removal of the debris will continue today.

“No work will be performed during rush hour or at night,” Nekota added.

Police closed one makai-bound lane on Punahou Street just before the Arcadia Retirement Residence and fronting the First Church of Christ Scientist Tuesday to accommodate work crews.

The age and condition of the tree will be released as soon as city Division of Urban Forestry has completed its examination.

Nestled on the corner of Punahou Street and Wilder Avenue the .7-acre Punahou Square Park was once the property of Missionaries, and was acquired by the city in the 1960s. Punahou Square Park is home to several significant exceptional trees, including a grand Banyan Tree, which serves as a focal point for the park.
