Rainbow Wahine basketball team holds off Northern Arizona

The University of Hawaii women’s basketball team saw a 14-point halftime lead cut to two before the Rainbow Wahine hung on for a 61-52 road win over Northern Arizona today at Flagstaff, Ariz.

UH sophomore guard Sarah Toeaina led UH (2-0) with 14 points and Destiny King finished with 13 and the Rainbow Wahine completed a sweep of their season-opening road trip to Arizona.

UH senior Ashleigh Karaitiana scored all 10 of her points in the second quarter and the Rainbow Wahine led by as many as 16 before taking a 35-21 lead into halftime.

NAU chipped into the lead in the second half and closed to 50-48 with 5:33 left in the fourth quarter. Toeaina responded with a jumper and UH center Connie Morris scored off an assist from Briana Harris and the Wahine were able to hold off the Lumberjacks (0-1).

Freshman center Alyssa Rader led NAU with 12 points and 10 rebounds before fouling out.

UH will play host to Loyola Marymount in its home opener on Friday in the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic.
