Police looking for ‘armed and dangerous’ suspect in shooting death

Hawaii County Police are looking for an “armed and dangerous” suspect in the shooting death of a 39-year-old man in a home in South Hilo Thursday night.

Police said officers responded to a home in the 100 block of West Kawailani Street at about 10:20 p.m. and found an unresponsive man outside the home with a gunshot wound.

Witnesses reported hearing gunshots and said a car fled from the scene.

The victim, identified as Keola Penovaro, of Hilo, was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 10:57 p.m.

Police are looking for 34-year-old Kalani Lono Kaohimaunu, of Hilo, and have identified him as a suspect in the case.

He is described as 5-foot 10-inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, with brown hair. He may be driving a brown or tan Honda or Acura sedan.

Police said Kaohimaunu is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.
