UH interviews five finalists for head football coach

Five candidates — all with University of Hawaii backgrounds — have been interviewed for the Rainbow Warriors’ head football coaching job, sources told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
They are Rich Ellerson, June Jones, Rich Miano, Brian Norwood and Nick Rolovich.
Barring a late addition, they would be the only finalists interviewed by athletic director David Matlin and his advisory panel. Interviews are said to have all been about an hour-long.
The job posting drew more than 60 applicants, UH said.
Matlin declined comment today, pledging to preserve the “integrity of the process.”
Norm Chow was fired Nov. 1, one day after the ‘Bows lost to Air Force, dooming UH to a fifth consecutive losing season and fourth under Chow.
Ellerson, who has been a head coach at Army, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Southern Utah, played for UH (1974-76) and coached at UH under Dick Tomey and Bob Wagner. He was 20-41 in five seasons at Army.
Jones played at UH in 1974 and was an assistant in 1983 and was a head coach in the NFL with the Atlanta Falcons and San Diego Chargers and at Southern Methodist. He remains UH’s winningest football coach with a 76-41 record amassed between 1999 and 2007.
Miano went from UH walk-on to all-Western Athletic Conference in a playing career from 1982-84. After an 11-year NFL career, he spent 13 seasons as an assistant coach at UH. He is currently an analyst on UH games for Oceanic.
Norwood played at UH 1983-84 and 1986-87. He is the co-defensive coordinator at Tulsa and has also coached at Baylor and Penn State.
Rolovich, who played (2000-01) and coached (2008-11) for UH, still holds several passing records at the school. He has been offensive coordinator at Nevada the past four seasons.
