High surf advisory for north and west shores

Surf along the north shores of the Hawaiian Islands could reach 24 feet Sunday, the National Weather Service warned.

The weather service today issued a high-surf advisory for the north and west shores of Oahu, Kauai, Niihau and Molokai and the north shores of Maui and Hawaii island.

The advisory is in effect through 6 p.m. Sunday.

Surf of 15-to-20 feet today was expected to reach 18-to-24 feet Sunday, the weather service said.

The result will be moderate to strong breaking waves and strong longshore and rip currents, making swimming difficult and dangerous, the agency said.

A small craft advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m. Sunday for Hawaiian waters, with winds topping 30 mph and seas of 10 feet or greater.

Meanwhile, showers are expected over the windward Big Island and East Maui tonight, while the rest of the state remains mostly dry. Tradewind weather with limited showers will prevail into next week with breezy conditions continuing through Sunday before dropping to moderate levels next week, the weather service said.
