Honolulu firefighters rescued a pair of visitors from Australia who found themselves lost after dark on the Kaau Crater Trail in Palolo.

A dozen personnel from four Honolulu Fire Department personnel companies responded to the 7:23 p.m. emergency call.

Firefighters located the man and woman, who had learned about the trail from an online review, with the assistance of the department’s Air 1 helicopter. The couplewas airlifted off the trail around 8:48 p.m.

HFD spokesman Capt. Kendall Ching cautioned would-be hikers to be wary of online hiking reviews and recommendations, noting that differences in skill level canlead to errant expectations about how long it may take to complete a trail.

Ching also encouraged hikers who find themselves in need of assistance to call for help as early as possible.
