The cruise ship, Grand Princess, docked at Honolulu Harbor last year, stands above the Kakaako area.

The Grand Princess, a 2,600 passenger cruise ship headed to Hawaii from San Francisco, experienced a fire in its engine room and lost power about 100 miles from Hilo this morning.

The Coast Guard said the crew of the Princess Cruises ship crew was able to extinguish the fire just before 8 a.m. and restarted its engine, resuming its voyage.

A California couple on the cruise ship said the vessel will bypass its Hilo port call and instead will go to Honolulu on one engine.

Jo Arrow sent a text to her son in California this morning saying, “About 100 miles from Hilo HI. Adrift for about an hour. Now going 8-10 knots per hour. Expect full power about 8:30 HI time. Still no lights. No apparent danger. We are on the Grand Princess. 2600 passengers plus 1,000 or more crew.”

Kelly Nix said his mother later sent another text that said the captain informed the passengers that “the ship has only one working engine and there are two small tug boats that might get the ship into port.”

The Coast Guard said the vessel reported that it would not need any assistance getting into port after the crew extinguished the fire.

Arrow said the ship left San Francisco Nov. 25 and was expected to return on Dec. 10.
