The National Weather Service has issued a high surf warning for the north- and west-facing shores of Kauai and Niihau through 6 p.m. tonight.

A high surf advisory is still in effect for the north- and west-facing shores of Oahu, Maui and Molokai through 6 a.m. Tuesday. A high surf advisory has also been issued for the west-facing shores of Hawaii island starting at noon today.

According to the weather service, a larger-than-expected west-northwest swell is expected to peak this morning and gradually decline through mid-week. Waves are expected to reach 20 to 25 feet on north shores in warning areas. Surf in advisory areas is expected to reach up to 16 to 20 feet on north shores and 10 to 14 feet on west shores.

Weather officials advise beachgoers to expect strong breaking waves, shore break, and dangerous longshore and rip currents.
