The Coast Guard is seeking the public’s help in locating the owner of a single-person red and yellow kayak found off the southern coast of Maui.

The 8- to 10-foot kayak was recovered at 7 a.m. off Makena. The case is being classified as a possible distress.

The kayak had no growth on it and has the seat in. It was unmanned and adrift with no gear on board and had no identification on it.

The kayak was recovered by a boat and turned over to the Coast Guard on Maui.

Anyone with information on the kayak's owner or possible point of origination is asked to call the Coast Guard at (808) 842-2600.

I hope the owner is safe. Happened several times where beachgoers left their gear and went home. People leave kayaks, surfboards, dive gear and floats, etc. without taking it home with them. No ID on the items, so Coast Guard and other agencies trying to locate the owners, but, they're at home. Costly for CG and fire department to put on searches when it is not necessary. Taxpayers footing the bill. People, put your name and phone number on your items. If you don't want your gear, give it to somebody.
