State lawmakers want to create a homeland security office within the state Department of Defense to help prevent terrorist attacks in Hawaii.

Lawmakers met in a conference committee today to discuss the proposal. The House and Senate have already approved different versions of it but must choose one.

Sen. Will Espero says the committee plans to adopt the House version. He noted that the measure is appropriate considering the explosions in Boston this week.

The defense department says the bill would give its current efforts more structure and efficiency. Critics say the office would waste money and resources.

Espero says the committee needs to wait for approval from the budget committee before it can move forward with the bill. Lawmakers plan to revisit the proposal on Tuesday.

Oh for crying out loud, any opportunity to spend more money and add more government. We had APEC and did we need more protection? No. We already have layers and layers of law enforcement, a big military presence, Feds all over the place and we still need more? No.

Stop being so afraid of the boogey man, USA.

This is another stupid thing coming out from the legislate. I'd really like to know who the idiots of this bill is. Along with our do nothing Sheriff's that takes two officers to issue a traffic citation another layer of incompetent law enforcement will be created.

That's all we need - to throw more money we don't have at duplicating efforts. I still cant figure out why the city needs a business economic development office when the state already has this. Did somebody owe a favor to Ann Chung?

All private boats must have internal cameras linked to the command center. No one should be allowed to own a private boat. Boat ownership fees must be increased substantially over time, this way no one could afford a boat. All evil black boats must be banned.
