Police: Man killed girlfriend, 3 others in Washington shooting

LAST UPDATED: 01:45 a.m. HST, Apr 23, 2013

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. » A 28-year-old man fatally shot and killed his live-in girlfriend inside an apartment south of Seattle, then went on a rampage that left three men dead, including a neighbor who had phoned 911 to report hearing gunfire, authorities said.

Arriving officers found a chaotic scene in Federal Way on Sunday night, and authorities say officers twice shot at the suspect, in a stairway and in a parking lot.

Federal Way Police Chief Brian Wilson said at a news conference Monday that the suspect confronted officers with a shotgun. They fired upon the suspect, Wilson said, but the man fled to a nearby parking lot.

There, Wilson said they found him on the ground. When they approached him again he reached for a handgun, and Wilson said police again opened fire. The suspect died at the scene.

"This is one of the most dangerous ... calls for law enforcement to respond to," Wilson said.

Neither the suspect nor the victims have been identified. Wilson said the victims were the suspect's 25-year-old girlfriend, and three men, ages 24, 46 and 62.

Police were still piecing together information, but believe the suspect shot his girlfriend in the unit they shared and left the apartment. He then confronted two men, the 24-year-old and 46-year-old, argued with them and fatally shot them both, authorities said.

The 62-year-old man had heard the commotion from another apartment in the building, Wilson said, went outside to investigate then retreated inside his residence to call 911. Wilson said the suspect broke down that man's door with a shotgun and killed him.

Authorities first received reports of suspicious circumstances about 9:35 p.m. Sunday.

"When officers arrived there were still shots being fired," said Federal Way police spokeswoman Cathy Schrock.

After police flooded the area and carried out searches, authorities said they were confident there were no more casualties from the shooting.

By dawn, a King County medical examiner's office truck arrived at the scene to pick up bodies. Crime scene investigators continued working. One officer was seen carrying books and a gun to what appeared to be an evidence van.

A total of eight officers fired their weapons, Schrock said. All have been placed on administrative leave, per standard policy, as the investigation continues.

Wilson said the investigation was ongoing. He said the suspect, who had a valid concealed weapons permit, had no criminal history. However Wilson said officers had responded to two prior domestic violence calls in Federal Way and Seattle. Both incidents were verbal and nature and no arrests were made, Wilson said.

Federal Way is about 20 miles south of Seattle.

Ya, because making it against the law to own guns will make guns disappear. Just like because drugs are illegal they are nowhere to be found right?

Exactly, I was also wondering why ricin and pressure cooker bombs are illegal. Ricin and bombs don't kill people, people kill people. It takes a good guy with ricin to stop a bad guy with ricin.

So you're saying that WMD and nuclear weapons don't kill people either?

Police knew of the suspect because of minor incidents. They knew he had weapons because he legally obtained it. Gun owners should never argue with anyone.

Thanks NRA for using all your money and power for such an important cause - the right to be able to act like pubescent high schoolers again. Guns, killing, and indifference to others. Woohoo!

Perhaps we should at least make bombs illegal ? It really stopped the death in Boston didn't it ? A tool is a tool, most folks use a knife as a tool, some stab other people.....is it the knife ? Should we ban them ?

When people snap because of domestics or financial problems they can end up grabbing for that gun. To them it's the fastest and most efficient way to end their problems..kill the wife or girlfriend who is leaving you and taking the kids with her..or kill the ones you love because you can't see them living on the streets, and you feel like a failure...don't have to be mentally ill to end up killing someone like a lot of people think.

Ever see the people at a Gun roadshow? Country bumpkins, overweight, couldn't exercise, grade school graduates that spend a months paycheck,(minimum worker) on the Gun of the Month, while their gf gets entitlement WIC and welfare to support his poor kids. Then he forgets to secure his gun? Poor kids.

I'm sure the 62-year-old 911 caller might've respected the antigun and anti-NRA sentiments expressed here - right up until his door was broken down and he was shot dead. It's been stated here before: when seconds count the police are only minutes away.
