Robbers strike UH-Manoa over weekend

By Star-Advertiser staff

LAST UPDATED: 12:19 p.m. HST, May 06, 2013

Two separate robberies were reported on the University of Hawaii Manoa campus this weekend, UH security reported.

The first occurred at 1:37 a.m. Saturday when a man took the identification badge of a security guard after the guard had cited the suspect’s car that was parked at the Hale Noelani dormitory. The suspect attempted to take the guard's citation computer but, being unsuccessful, took the guard's identification badge instead.

Two hours later at 3:40 a.m., two men took a skateboard of a man visiting the Hale Aloha dormitory courtyard. A witness reported three men arguing. Two of the men allegedly assaulted another man in the courtyard before fleeing toward the Hale Wainani area.

Forget new security company, UH needs to hire off duty HPD officers. Previous administration flap betwen the State and Correa was that he did not HPD to work off duty at UH because it is State and supposed State Sheriff territory. f that. For the amount of money UH wastes on obscene admin salaries, lawyers, failed music concerts, hire couple HPD officer 8-9pm and sunrise to patrol UH and the dorms via motorscooter, segway, bicycle or whatever. Also set up cameras on campus and stream video over the internet for HPD AND UH students to view and call in something if they see something fishy. The way the assaults and robberies keep on occurring and student is going to get killed or severely beaten and only then will UH admin make a PR move to have off duty HPD patrol UH campus and dorms.

The article says security, but it really wasn't UH security. More like parking lot attendants run by Star Protection agency. What needs to happen is they need a campus police department. Scrap the current lot and re-hire. They tried to do this years ago by converting the existing UH security into police, but they found that they would have to fire too many officers because they wouldn't be able to either pass checks, or be able to carry a firearm, so they scrapped the idea.

Thefts, robberies and assaults will probably go up in the next few weeks because it's almost the end of the semester. Criminals have to do their thing before campus is deserted.

As I have mentioned eariler, we should have place police presence on the campus. Many universities already have stations within their campus. Further, the security is obviously inadequate and should be terminated. The head of the security should be removed immediately and his higher up obviously need to be looked at closely as to whether he or she is capable of directing a campus security.

Security is lacking at UH! What are the security guards doing? Why not install cameras to record the robberies.

Yep, cameras can record people and be used as evidence. Cameras are more reliable than witness descriptions. You get 2 or more people to describe the person, and you get 2 or more different descriptions. But, they have to buy cameras that's better than bank surveillance cameras. Most bank cameras are grainy, out of focus and useless. Instead of hiring the 10 or whatever planned new security guards, buy quality cameras and place them all over the campus. Every time there's an assault or robbery or whatever on campus, you never see ONE picture of the person. If homeowners and small businesses can have cameras, why can't UH? Cameras also serves as a deterrent. If the criminal sees one, he might think twice about his intentions. I bet it would change at least some of their minds.

Speaking of UH. Read an article that according to Apple, he is saying that if the Athletic Dept. is unable to break even in three years he is not sure if UH can countinue to play D1 sports. If thats the case lets do away with all sports, and we won't need an AD,and coaches. No need to pay out bonus money either.? Will he still be here in three years? Ben Jay agree's with him. Guess Jay found out that UH dosen't have those people with deep pockets that will support UH like the Buckeyes have.
