An owner of Grace’s Inn died after the SUV he was driving crashed on the Pali Highway this morning.

Restaurant employees of restaurant identified the 76-year-old driver who died as Takashi Kiyozuka.

His wife, Yoko, 67, was also critically injured in the accident.

The accident involved an SUV, which was headed into town when it crashed at 10:28 a.m., authorities said.

The vehicle apparently left the townbound lanes, crossed the median strip and ended on the shoulder of the Kailua-bound lanes.

Police reopened the Pali Highway in both directions more than a hour after the crash.

Town-bound lanes on the Pali Highway were closed at 11:33 a.m. from Castle Junction. At the same time all Kailua-bound lanes on the Pali Highway beginning at Wyllie street in Nuuanu were shut down as the police investigated the accident. The highway was reopened about 1 p.m.

When is HIDOT going to get serious with road safety and put a concrete barrier down the Pali in areas where it is needed? How many more have to die before DOT bureaucrats get off their O K O L E, out of the office, and see the real world. A safely divided highway would eliminate many of the accidents and resulting economic damage from road shutdowns. HIDOT = Bureaucracy.

They need to take away the licenses from the eldery and replace it with free bus passes. They are old and yet fragile like babies, they shouldn't be driving or have that type of freedoms.

Different news sites have him driving @ a high rate of speed... 80 mph, to be exact. Not sure how reliable that was, but to barrel-roll in mid-air, he had to be moving. Wonder if it was a medical condition? RIP & best wishes to his wife for her speedy recovery.
