Moped riders are sometimes to blame, but motorists in general show disdain for pedestrians, bicyclists, and moped riders, like they are "in the way." Until this attitude of Honolulu motorists changes, yes, AhiPoke, will continue to be daily occurrence.

gthx I couldn't disagree with you more completely. I walk whenever i get the chance and have found MOST motorists to be courteous. Moped riders however are, with rare exceptions rude and completely ignorant of the rules of the road. I regularly see moped riders cut off pedestrians, especially of their elderly and often will buzz dangerously close to them while cutting them off because these elderly don't move fast enough for their liking. I regularly see mopeds cutting off buses, yes buses and these buses are forced to brake suddenly to avoid the moped. I agree that these mopeds getting hit will most likely continue to be a nearly daily event until moped riders are required to have a valid drivers license and the police start enforcing traffic laws on those who violate.

Unfortunately the moped rear ended the auto as auto was waiting to make a left turn onto Kuilei from University. Sure hope the moped driver will be ok.

When are they going to start regulating mopeds as a motor vehicle instead of a bicycle? Don't they have a motor?

This is all part of an Obama administration conspiracy to take away our freedom the ride mopeds. For those of you advocatiing for more moped control remember this: mopeds don't kill people, people do. They can get my moped when they pry it from my cold dead hand. God bless America!

They should require registration, fees, safety check & require insurance just like any other vehicle. IMHO.

It only costs $18 to register your moped forever -- just like a bicycle. Mopeds are everywhere and they use the roads extensively. It's a bunch of nonsense for mopeds to pay a one time registration fee and not pay for the road maintenance. It's also a bunch of nonsense for mopeds to be considered a bicycle.

This story matches the other story on overspending on paramedic on why we are wasting good money on the paramedics to fix up these dummies who throw caution into the wind.
