A kayaker got into trouble Friday morning off Black Point in East Honolulu and had to be helped by Ocean Safety personnel.

Capt. Carlton Yamada, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said the distress call came in at 9:33 a.m.

A man got separated from his kayak about 200 yards from the shore, Yamada said.

Ocean Safety rescue personnel were able to retrieve the craft and return it to the kayaker 30 minutes later.

When I have kayaked off Black Point I have always worn a leash. Did a leash break or was this person not using one?

If this guy wants to go kayaking, he should do it in Alaska. In Hawai'i, it's the wa'a 'iako ...outrigger canoe.
