Search suspended for naked woman in Washington forest

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 04:52 a.m. HST, Jun 12, 2013

STEVENSON, Wash. » Authorities are suspending their search for a Vancouver woman who set out naked on Sunday on a spiritual quest in a southwest Washington forest.

Skamania County Sheriff Dave Brown said Tuesday evening that two days of searching have failed to find 19-year-old Maureen Kelly. He says the search is being suspended until the end of the week.

Twelve teams in four-wheel vehicles searched Tuesday but found nothing related to the hunt for the young woman. The sheriff says deputies will continue to check the area in the next several days and then the operation will be re-evaluated.

The Canyon Creek area of the Gifford Pinchot National Forest is steep with heavy timber and brush. The weather has included periods of drizzle with temperatures in the lower 50s.

Kelly left about 5 p.m. Sunday wearing only a fanny pack with a compass and a knife.

Probably consumed too many of the Pacific Northwest mushrooms. How ignorant - even cavemen knew to wear pelts when roaming the outdoors in the North...

Probably was consumed by a Pacific Northwest black bear. You run into those things when you roam outdoors in the North.

It was her decision to go on this spiritual quest so why look for her? Who requested this search? If no one requested a search, why would authorities step in? This woman is an adult, maybe a stupid adult but an adult never the less. Don't mean to sound cold hearted but its tax payers money being wasted for someone's foolishness.

Normally when you do a search, first on the checklist is "What was she wearing?"
