A Maui man was injured Wednesday night when a fire, believed to have been accidentally started, caused $200,000 worth of damage to a two-bedroom apartment in Kaanapali.

The fire was reported at 10:50 p.m. at the Kaanapali Royale residential complex on Kekaa Drive.

The fire was brought under control at 11:15 p.m.

An 84-year-old man, the lone occupant of the apartment, was taken to a hospital in critical condition with burns to his body.

Fire damages were estimated at $180,000 to the 2-bedroom, 2-bath unit with an estimated $20,000 in damages to its contents.

The cause of the fire is "undetermined" at this time; however based on observations at the scene and circumstances of the fire, the fire is most likely an accidental fire, Maui fire officials said.
