Fire rescue personnel found two men in their 20s who got into trouble Thursday morning in the Koolau Mountains trying to reach Haiku Stairs in Kaneohe.
Capt. Robert Main, Honolulu Fire Department spokesman, said rescue officials received the distress call at 9:15 a.m. from one of the two hikers who said they were lost after beginning their trek from Moanalua Valley earlier that morning.
The hikers got stuck somewhere along the ridgeline near the H-3 tunnel. Due to the cloud cover, The fire helicopter crew couldn’t immediately fly in due to low visibility from cloud cover and had to wait it out, said Capt. Gary Lum.
The helicopter picked up the first hiker at about 10:40 a.m. and the second shortly thereafter and brought to Kaneohe District Park.
Fire personnel located the hikers’ position using GPS from their cellphone. The two men were uninjured.Click here to download our mobile app for your iOS and Android device.
