Mysterious Maui cane fires keep firefighters busy

Three intentionally set fires overnight in central Maui destroyed nine acres of sugar cane, resulting in damages valued at more than $45,000.

Maui fire officials said the fires were set within an hour of each other beginning at 10:57 p.m. Thursday just south of Waikapu on 30 Restaurant on Honoapiilani Highway. The fire was contained an hour later.

At 11:50 p.m., another cane fire was reported about a mile above the landfill on the left side of Pulehu Road. The fire was contained at 12:07 a.m.

Just after midnight, at 12:11 a.m., a third cane fire was reported on the south side Kuihelani Highway, about 200 yards east of the Maui Lani Parkway intersection. The fire was contained at 1:50 a.m.
