Governor to sign bill supporting beekeeping

Gov. Neil Abercrombie plans to sign legislation aimed at encouraging and supporting Hawaii beekeepers.

A bill signing for the measure will be held at the governor's office today.

The legislation exempts home-based agricultural honey producers from a requirement that they process honey in a certified honey house and obtain a permit.

The exemption is limited to producers who sell less than 500 gallons of honey a year. Only those who sell directly to consumers or directly to a retailer that sells directly to consumers may take advantage of the exemption.

Producers must write their name and addresses on their product labels. Their labels must also include warnings that the Department of Health hasn't inspected the product and infants under one year shouldn't consume honey.
