S.C. man fights off, kills alleged home intruder

LAST UPDATED: 08:07 a.m. HST, Jun 19, 2013

WELLFORD, S.C. » Authorities say a Spartanburg homeowner shot and killed an alleged intruder using a gun he grabbed from one of the two would-be robbers.

Deputies responded to a reported home invasion in Wellford just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. They found a dead man lying in front of a nearby home, wearing plastic gloves.

A woman living at the home told deputies she was sitting on the couch when a man came in and put a gun to her head. She yelled for her husband, who came in and fought with the intruder.

The woman said the suspect dropped the gun, which her husband picked up and shot him in the head. Deputies say a second suspect fled the home and hasn't been found.

The dead intruder's family is probably already talking to lawyers about suing for the use of excessive force. They'll claim he was a really nice man who got killed while entering this home by mistake.

While many here are calling him a hero, he might just get prosecuted for shooting a fleeing person. When he dropped his gun, he is technically unarmed. While fleeing, he posed NO treat to them. One should only use deadly force to save one's life. In this case, that was not the case. Basically he shot an unarmed Man. There is a chance that he is prosecuted. To shoot someone is taking a big avoidable chance of defending one's self in Court, hiring a Lawyer, etc. Wiser NOT to shoot and spare one's self a lot of grief. Even the thought of killing someone weighs heavy in their minds. It is NOT worth it. Pity.

Cops shoot at fleeing crooks. And what goes in a man's mind when he sees an intruder pointing a gun at his wife's head?

I guess if you break into someone's home with a gun, you may not have a chance later to appear in court.
