The 24-year-old man who was struck by pickup truck Saturday while crossing the Pali Highway died at the hospital Monday.

Police said the victim, who has a Marine Corps Base Hawaii address, was crossing the Kailua-bound lanes of the highway, near the tunnels, when he was struck by the Kailua-bound truck. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The victim’s identity has not been released.

Police said speed and alcohol do not appear to have been factors on the part of the driver. It is not known if alcohol was a factor on the part of the pedestrian.

This was Oahu’s 35th traffic death, compared with 31 at the same time last year.

No one expects to see a pedestrian crossing the freeway in the dark at 10:30pm at night near the Pali Tunnels going 45 mph. I wonder what was so important to be walking in a danger zone.
