Hawaii County police have captured a carjacking suspect after an all-day search.

Police said Jeremy Todd Rios walked out of a pasture area at about 6:30 p.m. to Mauna Kea Access Road, where a police officer making checks in the area arrested him.

Rios was being taken to the Hilo Police cellblock, where he will be held while detectives continue the investigation.

The Mauna Kea Access Road has been reopened to traffic.

Police set up a roadblock at the entrance to Mauna Kea Access Road off Saddle Road this morning after Rios, 31, seen fleeing into the brush in the area and the car stolen in the carjacking incident was recovered on Mauna Kea Access Road.

Police were looking for Rios after a black Honda was seen in a parking lot on Kinoole Street where Rios appeared to be brandishing a handgun, at 7:40 a.m., according to Capt. Robert Wagner of the Hawaii Police Department. He was believed to be visiting someone at one of the business establishments in the area.

After driving from the parking lot, Rios collided into a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck at the intersection of Kilauea and Ohea Streets. The driver of the pickup truck suffered injuries and was transported to Hilo Medical Center. The driver’s condition is unknown at this time.

Wagner said the suspect then stole a white 2007 Honda sedan from a woman who stopped her vehicle in traffic due to the collision. Police said the woman was not injured.

Rios is described as 5-foot-7, 170 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. Police said he has numerous tattoos including a brass knuckle tattoo on his throat. He was considered armed and dangerous.

Rios has a criminal record of abuse of a household member and criminal contempt — both misdemeanors — and disorderly conduct, a petty misdemeanor.
