A 36-year-old Wailea man, who was injured when the car he was driving hit a parked trailer in Kihei in June, died Thursday at Maui Memorial Medical Center, Maui police reported.

Sirius Pereira was taken to the hospital in critical condition following the June 30 accident on Mapu Place. He died at 11:40 a.m. Thursday.

Police said drugs and alcohol were contributing factors in the accident.

Pereira was heading eastbound on Mapu Place when he drifted off the road and hit a trailer parked on the eastbound shoulder of the road at 7:58 p.m. June 30.

This is Maui’s 10th traffic death, compared to 15 at the same time a year ago.

Hope I am not the only one that sometimes at night, a stalled car is unexpected so you think you are following it. Then suddenly you realize that car is stalled or off the road. Hence, since that trailer did not belong there, it may have been a contributing factor to the accident.
