Zimmerman will ask Florida to pay some legal bills

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 02:51 p.m. HST, Aug 27, 2013

ORLANDO, Fla. » George Zimmerman's attorney is going to ask the state of Florida to pay for some of his client's non-lawyer legal bills.

Attorney Mark O'Mara said today that the defense team is still totaling up its trial expenses. But he says that it may eventually bill the state as much as $300,000.

He says the costs were incurred for experts, as well as costs such as printing of deposition transcripts and court reporters.

Zimmerman was acquitted last month of all charges in the shooting of Miami teenager Trayvon Martin.

State law allows defendants to get their legal expenses reimbursed by the state if they are found not guilty.

O'Mara normally bills at $400 per hour. He says neither he nor any of his fellow attorneys have been paid anything.

Whether or not George Zimmerman was actually guilty or innocent, the jury found him Not Guilty. So that's that. In the eyes of the law, he didn't do anything wrong.Logic says that if the court found him not guilty, then by extension he shouldn't have been charged and shouldn't have to pay to defend himself. The state should re-reimburse him or pay his lawyers. How many other cases are there where a state spends thousands or millions of dollars to prosecute, only to the defendant not guilty? When the defendant is found guilty, it's probably money well spent (though usually at inflated rates... O'Mara charging $400.00 hr seems a lot). How much will Hawaii spend on the Deedy case? The Feds should ante up to help with our expenses. He was their man.
