Maui police have identified the 52-year-old Wailuku man who allegedly set fire to his home and killed himself as Hal Silva.
An autopsy will be conducted to determine cause of Silva's death, a police statement said.
Police said investigators are continuing to interview family, friends and neighbors as they try to determine a motive for the incident.
Police said Silva was suffering from mental health issues, which he believed were caused by carbon monoxide poisoning from his past employment with the state.
Neighbors reported hearing yelling and gunshots at 6:19 a.m. Thursday.
When Wailuku patrol officers arrived at 1364 Kakae Place they were told that Silva had set his home on fire and had fired gunshots within the home.
After Maui firefighters extinguished the flames they found the Silva's charred body along with three dead dogs and one injured.
Silva's wife was home when the victim began to douse their home with gasoline and started shooting their dogs, police said.
