Second dry ice explosion reported at Los Angeles airport

By Associated Press

LAST UPDATED: 06:43 a.m. HST, Oct 15, 2013

LOS ANGELES » A dry ice explosion rattled nerves late Monday at Los Angeles International Airport in the second such incident in as many days, but there were no reports of any injuries or evacuations, authorities said.

The incident was reported shortly before 8:30 p.m. at the airport's Tom Bradley International Terminal. The dry ice was found near a gate area, a secure part of LAX only accessible to airport workers, according to the Los Angeles Times. There were no reports of significant damage.

Two other devices also were found at the airport but they did not explode, Detective Gus Villanueva said.

Investigators don't believe the incident is linked to terrorism and no threat was called into the airport, Villanueva said.

No flights were affected by the explosion, authorities said.

On Sunday night, someone planted a plastic bottle containing dry ice that exploded in an employee bathroom in LAX's terminal 2, a secure area inaccessible to the public. Up to four flights were delayed after airport police halted security screening for more than an hour.

No arrests have been made in either case.

A bomb squad was at the airport late Monday and investigators from the LAPD's criminal conspiracy division were assisting, Villanueva said.

Any combination of materials that can expand can explode. 2 liter bottle , water, dry icr is the combo I believe. Dry ice melts and turns into co2, expanding. Too much pressure and it will explode the sealed container

just another exercise to keep the TSA and airport security on their toes and to justify their presence at the airports. Be afraid everyone; Be afraid.
