Kauai Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr. has named County Councilwoman Nadine Nakamura as managing director to replace Gary Heu, who will retire at the end of this month after 11 years in the post.

Nakamura is currently vice chair of the Kauai County Council, serving halfway into her second term on that body.

The rest of the six remaining council members will have until Nov. 30 to pick her replacement, who will serve until November 2014.

Nakamura holds a bachelors of science degree from the University of Southern California in public affairs and urban planning, and a masters degree from the University of Hawaii in urban and regional planning.
