Police are asking for help in finding a suspect or suspects who assaulted an 83-year-old man in Chinatown Tueday night, leaving him in critical condition with head injuries.

Police identified the victim as Mamerto "Eddie" Semana.

Police said Semana was found unconscious near College Walk and Kukui Street.

An ambulance was called around 3:24 a.m., about four hours after the alleged assault occurred, the Emergency Medical Services report said.

Semana was dressed in a blue denim jacket and blue denim long pants.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellular phone.

Stay inside when it's dark. I made the mistake of going out early one morning to the local grocery store--scared me. There are creatures out there that I have never seen before--I did a 180 and locked the door when I got home.

We keep hearing, seeing and reading regularly about women and elderly being assaulted. Our lawmakers and judges need to see to it that these cowardly lowlifes receive heavy sentences when convicted. Might be a good idea to revive the practice of reviving chain gangs for these people. (Yes, the kind where the prison guards carry 12 gauge shotguns.) While they're at it, lawmakers should make it easier, quicker and more convenient for the elderly (60 and older), women, and those with infirmities to obtain background checks, permits to purchase, training and qualification, and permits to carry for this group of people. Obviously, it is not feasible for the police to provide the necessary protection needed with these predators on the streets, so people need the means to increase their own self-protection, and the prisons need to make confinement for these heinous crimes as unpleasant as possible.

When you treat homeless like animals, they behave like animals. The US is the richest nation in the world, BY FAR, and refuses to enact a National Healthcare policy or take some kind of care of our homeless. THIS is the result, a poor 80 year old dude gets mugged.

Nope. It's the result of perceived "entitlements" by our undertrodden who never learned how to pick themselves up by their bootstraps like our older generation did. The "great society" is the problem which Obama is helping perpetuate.

We need to find out who these perps are before we pass judgement. It would not surprise me that they end up being those who are mentally disturbed and have been sent here from other States that do not want to deal with their own...and they may not be even homeless just mentally disturbed...or a combination of both. I believe we are also aware of the serial rapist who could be hanging around the Ala Moana / Pawaa / Kapiolani neighborhood? When they apprehend this rapist, it will be of interest to reveal profile. Too many good folks leaving Hawaii and not too impressed with what's inbound...

It totally does NOT excuse the perpetrators I hope they catch them, lock them up and throw away the key), but why in the world would an 80 yr. old man be out and about in Chinatown on a weeknight, by himself, after 11:00PM?

He may have been homeless. Look at the picture of his "belongings". Looks like it's a bunch of stuff. Either that or he was really into the nightlife that Chinatown has to offer.

Bingo! There's a street gang that's targeting homeless individuals in Chinatown systematically. I say systematically because this is not an isolated incident. There have been multiple beatings and stabbings of homeless individuals in the Aala Park area over the past few months. Don't believe me? Try contacting IHS, Salvation Army and the other organizations which care for the homeless in the Chinatown area. While I can't say for sure that this same street gang attacked this 83-year-old homeless individual--chances are this is the same gang since it appears to be their MO.
