The Honolulu Police Department will be conducting motorcycle escort training on Lagoon Drive this morning from 9 to 11 a.m. possibly in preparation for another holiday visit for President Barack Obama and his family later this month.

Although the White House has not officially discussed the President's holiday plans, the New York Daily News has reported residents should expect the Obamas to arrive in Kailua around Dec. 20 and stay until Jan. 5.

The Honolulu Police Department did not disclose the reason for the training,

Obama has spent every Christmas, a total of six, in his birthplace since he was elected President in 2008.

The family usually rents a home near Kaneohe Bay, which is an easy distance to the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, where the family can access private beaches and workout in the gym.

During a visit by President George Bush in November 2006, police officer Steve Favella, 30, was killed after he and two other officers crashed near a bend along Hickam Air Force Base's O'Malley Boulevard while escorting the president. The two other motorcycle officers were taken to Queen's in serious condition and later released.

Favela died on Nov. 26, five days after the accident.

A Honolulu Police Department and U.S. Secret Service found no fault on the part of the officers involved and determined that they followed federal guidelines governing the protection of the presidential motorcade.

Why doesn't he use a helicopter and avoid a traffic mess--sure would save $$$$ HPD? His teleprompters can travel by car.

Do you realize how many motorcycle police officers escorting a presidential detail have crashed and died in Hawaii and on the mainland? In Hawaii I can think of at least two. One HPD officer was Favela lost control on slippery pavement, fractured his leg which severed a major artery and he bled to death before he could be treated in a hospital. The another HPD officer died in escort TRAINING on the streets in Millilani. One would hope people in charge HPD motorcycle escort detail have learned from the two deaths. One is no matter what, these officers need to stay within their limits of their own abilities and their motorcycles when trying to ride at break neck speed on the streets during presidential detail. When you think about all they are doing is traffic control and don't make one difference in terms of the safety of the president.
