A 22-year-old homeless man remains in police custody after he allegedly burglarized a Kona condominium and assaulted a police officer Monday, Hawaii County police said today.

Police charged Ian Medeiros with six offenses on Tuesday, including second-degree theft, resisting arrest, first-degree assault of a police officer, first-degree terroristic threatening, promoting a dangerous drug and possessing drug paraphernalia.

Medeiros allegedly entered a condo unit on the 75-6000 block of Kuakini Highway in Kailua-Kona through an unlocked door and stole a jewelry box, ukulele, mobile phones and several other items while the residents were sleeping, police said.

The residents called police at 7:16 a.m. Monday when they realized what had happened overnight. Nearly two hours later, police received a report of a man sleeping behind a garage in the same condo complex, police said.

An officer located the sleeping man, identified as Medeiros, and noticed items in his possession matching the description of stolen items from the burglary, police said.

Medeiros allegedly resisted arrest and struck the officer in the head, causing a laceration and swelling, according to police. A second officer arrived at the scene and assisted the first officer in subduing the suspect and placing him under arrest. The first officer was treated at the scene for his injuries.

Police said Medeiros remains at the Kona police cellblock unable to post $10,500 bail. His initial court appearance is scheduled for today.
