Police believe speed may have been a factor in a fatal moped crash Friday in Wahiawa.

The crash happened about 6:50 p.m. near Kilani Avenue and Mala Street.

Police said a 21-year-old man riding the moped was taken in critical condition to Wahiawa General Hospital after his moped collided with a 1996 Ford pickup. The man died at the hospital.

A 21-year-old woman who was driving the pickup was unhurt.

This is the fifth fatality this year, the same number at this time last year.

Dudes mod their mopeds to go faster but the brakes can't handle it. Something about mass x acceleration ... distance to stop... can't remember the formula, but often the results are disastrous.

a machine - ANY MACHINE - has to be used with pure common sense. any mis-use by an operator will invariably lead to a disastrous result...some kind of physical loss or death. it is all relative to the attitude of the user. wisdom is NOT common-place! there is no other way to put it!!

This girl was turning into her carport and turned in front of the moped. No fault there? Ah come' on. Easy to blame the moped rider. He's not alive to tell his side of the story.

yes many factors may have been in play that led to this circumstance...but driving a hopped up moped without serious consideration of any possible negative scenario is not a good thing - especially for the less protected moped-er. skyler said it well by mentioning the physics to consider. to put it bluntly - speed by itself does not always lead to death - but ANY SUDDEN STOP WILL !!!! always gotta ride SMART!!
